Jamuna Bridge Expansion Signals Bangladesh's Bid to End a Long-Standing Transport Bottleneck
As darkness settles over the Jamuna River during the Eid holidays, thousands of vehicles often remain trapped on the country's busiest bridge, their red tail lights stretching for kilometres like a motionless ribbon across the water. A crossing designed to take less than six minutes can instead consume several hours, turning one of Bangladesh's most important transport corridors into an annual symbol of frustration.
That recurring gridlock has become one of the biggest logistical challenges for a country whose economy depends heavily on the movement of people and goods between the capital and the northern districts. Now the government has launched an ambitious programme to widen and rehabilitate the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge, arguing that the project will remove a critical bottleneck while laying the foundation for a second bridge across the river in the next decade.
The 4.8-kilometre bridge, officially opened in 1998, transformed connectivity between Bangladesh's eastern and western regions. Before its construction, travellers and freight relied on ferries that were frequently delayed by weather and river conditions. The bridge linked 22 northern districts directly with Dhaka and the port city of Chattogram, dramatically reducing travel times and strengthening trade flows.
Built at a cost of about US$696 million, the bridge also carries gas pipelines, electricity transmission lines and telecommunications infrastructure, making it one of Bangladesh's most strategically important pieces of national infrastructure. It forms part of both the Asian Highway network and the Trans-Asian Railway corridor.
Yet one design decision has haunted the bridge for years.
When construction began, the bridge was not originally intended to carry railway traffic. However, railway operations were introduced in 2004, requiring trains to share the structure with road transport. Engineers later detected cracks in parts of the bridge deck, with specialists attributing the damage largely to vibrations generated by heavy rail traffic.
To reduce structural stress, train speeds across the bridge were restricted to 20 kilometres per hour, meaning each train required roughly 22 minutes to complete the crossing. During those periods, road traffic was severely constrained, creating lengthy queues that became particularly acute during the Eid holidays when vehicle numbers more than doubled.
A separate railway bridge, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), became operational last year, removing rail traffic from the original structure. But while that eased one source of pressure, the bridge itself remained too narrow to cope efficiently with rising traffic volumes.
The government now plans to convert the abandoned railway section into additional road space as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation project.
Earlier this week, the Bangladesh Bridge Authority signed an agreement with a joint venture between China's China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) to undertake the widening and rehabilitation works.
The project will expand the bridge's usable roadway by converting approximately 3.5 metres of redundant railway space into a paved traffic lane. Existing traffic lanes, currently about 6.3 metres wide, will also be widened to around 7.3 metres, allowing vehicles to move more efficiently across the bridge.
Officials estimate the project will cost approximately Tk 2.78 billion and be completed within 18 months, although authorities hope that the principal widening works will finish before next year's Eid-ul-Fitr to minimise disruption during one of the country's busiest travel periods.
Traffic data illustrate the scale of the challenge.
Under normal conditions, the bridge carries between 20,000 and 22,000 vehicles every day. During major festivals, traffic volumes rise dramatically. On a single day during Eid-ul-Fitr in March 2026, the bridge handled 51,384 vehicles, placing enormous pressure on infrastructure originally designed nearly three decades ago.
Transport planners believe that increasing road capacity will significantly reduce congestion, improve freight efficiency and shorten delivery times for agricultural products transported from northern Bangladesh to markets in Dhaka and southern districts. Faster transport could also reduce post-harvest losses for perishable produce, improving returns for farmers.
The economic importance of the bridge extends well beyond transport.
Earlier assessments by the World Bank suggested that the original Jamuna Bridge contributed substantially to poverty reduction across northern Bangladesh by improving market access, investment opportunities and labour mobility. Infrastructure specialists have similarly highlighted its broad social and economic impact since opening in 1998.
The current expansion project forms part of a wider strategy to strengthen national transport networks while supporting Bangladesh's long-term economic growth.
The government has also announced plans to construct a second Jamuna Bridge by 2033, with feasibility studies already under way. Proposed alignments include routes linking Sariakandi in Bogura with Madarganj in Jamalpur, or alternatively Balashi Ghat in Gaibandha with Dewanganj in Jamalpur.
If implemented, a second crossing would substantially increase transport capacity while creating an additional regional trade corridor linking Bangladesh with India's north-eastern states as well as Nepal and Bhutan.
The latest agreement also highlights China's continuing role in Bangladesh's transport infrastructure.
Chinese companies were involved in constructing the original Jamuna Bridge in the 1990s, while Chinese firms have also participated in bridge management and toll operations over the years. Their selection for the rehabilitation project reflects Beijing's sustained presence in Bangladesh's infrastructure sector, where Chinese engineering companies remain among the country's largest development partners.
For Bangladesh, however, the significance of the project is measured less by geopolitics than by practical necessity.
The Jamuna Bridge serves as the principal gateway between the capital and much of northern Bangladesh. Every hour lost to congestion imposes economic costs on businesses, freight operators and millions of passengers. Reducing those delays could improve supply chains, strengthen regional commerce and support continued economic integration across the country.
Construction work is expected to create temporary traffic disruptions. Yet officials argue that short-term inconvenience is unavoidable if Bangladesh is to modernise one of its most heavily used transport corridors.
Nearly three decades after the Jamuna Bridge first reshaped the country's geography, the structure is once again at the centre of Bangladesh's development ambitions. This time, the objective is not simply to cross the river more quickly, but to ensure that one of the nation's most important economic lifelines is capable of supporting the demands of the decades ahead.
