Bangladesh's premium hospitality sector is entering a new phase of competition as two of the world's largest hotel operators – IHG Hotels & Resorts and Marriott International – expand their presence in the country's growing business travel market.

Both companies currently operate four internationally branded hotels in Bangladesh, with IHG poised to take the lead as it prepares to open a fifth property near Dhaka's main international airport.

IHG's portfolio includes InterContinental Dhaka, Holiday Inn Dhaka City Centre, Crowne Plaza Dhaka Gulshan and the newly opened Crowne Plaza Dhaka Airport. The group is also developing InterContinental Dhaka Airport, which will increase its Bangladesh portfolio to five hotels once operations begin.

Marriott International, meanwhile, manages The Westin Dhaka, Le Méridien Dhaka, Renaissance Dhaka Gulshan Hotel and Sheraton Dhaka. Although Sheraton Dhaka has yet to become fully operational, the property is currently offering food and beverage services and is expected to launch room operations after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals.

Industry analysts say the rivalry reflects growing confidence in Bangladesh's hospitality sector, driven by rising business travel, expanding air connectivity and increasing demand for internationally recognised accommodation.

IHG's competitive advantage lies in the breadth of its brand portfolio. The company serves multiple market segments, ranging from luxury and upper-upscale properties to midscale hotels, enabling it to cater to corporate executives, leisure travellers and transit passengers with different budgets and preferences.

Marriott, by contrast, has built its reputation around premium and luxury brands. Its hotels, particularly those located in Gulshan and near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, remain popular among diplomats, multinational corporations, international organisations and high-end business travellers.

Beyond the two global leaders, Radisson Hotel Group maintains a smaller but significant presence in Bangladesh through Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden and Radisson Blu Chattogram Bay View. While operating only two hotels, the group continues to play a leading role in hosting major conferences, government functions, military events and meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE).

Despite the increasing number of international hotels, Bangladesh's global hospitality brands remain concentrated almost entirely in Dhaka, reflecting the capital's dominance as the country's commercial and diplomatic hub.

Major tourism destinations, including Cox's Bazar, have yet to attract large-scale investment from international hotel chains, although industry observers expect that to change as tourism infrastructure improves and visitor numbers continue to grow.

With new hotel developments under way and international operators expanding their footprints, analysts expect competition within Bangladesh's hospitality industry to intensify over the coming years, offering travellers a wider choice of globally branded accommodation while raising service standards across the sector.
