Shahadat Hossain filed a murder case with Kapasia Police Station, naming three to four unidentified people as accused in the murder. Forkan's village is in Meri Gopinathpur in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila. He has been absconding since the incident.
The father bought chocolates and chips from a shop with his children on the night of the murder.

At the press conference, Superintendent of Police Sharif Uddin said that with the help of information technology, the mobile phone used by the accused (Forkan) was recovered from the Sadar Police Station area of Meherpur on May 11. The truck driver's helper saw the mobile phone lying next to the railing in the middle of the Padma Bridge at approximately 6:50 am that day and picked it up. Later, after investigation and reviewing the CCTV camera footage of the Padma Bridge, it was found that at 6:42 am, a man wearing a white shirt and black pants got down from a white private car in the middle of the bridge. Later, he left something at the place where the mobile phone was located and stayed for 2-3 minutes and at one stage jumped over the railing of the bridge and jumped into the Padma River.
The householder called his brother and said, "I am cheating everyone, I will never find me again."

It is initially believed that he premeditatedly killed his wife, three daughters and brother-in-law and then jumped into the river from the Padma Bridge to commit suicide.
