Their Survival Is in Our Hands: The Road to Tx2 and Beyond Survival
The powerful slogan “Their survival is in our hands" is an urgent call to protect species like the Royal Bengal Tiger. Failing to combine local conservation with global policy makes this not just a wildlife crisis, but a civilizational failure.
To raise awareness and protect tigers from poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict, Global Tiger Day is observed every year on July 29, as established at the 2010 Saint Petersburg Summit.
Saving the tiger isn't just about protecting a single species, but preserving an entire ecosystem, as the loss of this apex predator would trigger the collapse of the forest and its wildlife.
A Century of Loss and a Fragile Recovery
As the largest cat species and iconic endangered animals, tigers have existed for 2 million years, with Java fossils dating back 1.6–1.8 million years. Once widespread across Asia, their range has drastically shrunk.
According to World Wide Fund (WWF) and the Global Tiger Forum (GTF) estimates, global tiger numbers dropped by over 95 per cent from around 100,000 in 1900 to an all-time low of roughly 3,200 in 2010. However, following the launch of the 'Tx2' initiative that same year, the population has rebounded, growing by about 74 per cent to reach approximately 5,574 in 2023–2026.
The 2010 Baseline vs. the 2026 Reality
When the governments of the 13 tiger-range countries adopted the ambitious Tx2 goal in 2010 at the St. Petersburg Tiger Summit, baseline data established by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and WWF outlined a stark country-by-country breakdown: India (1,411), Malaysia (500), Bangladesh (440), Russia (360), Indonesia (325), Thailand (170), Nepal (121), Myanmar (85), Bhutan (75), China (45), Laos (25), and Vietnam and Cambodia (10 each).
More than a decade later, current data for 2026—recognized by the IUCN and WWF—shows that while the global total has risen, national realities differ drastically:
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and WWF assessments, global tiger recovery shows sharp regional contrasts against 2010 baselines. India leads dramatically, soaring from 1,411 to 3,682 (range 3,167–3,925) tigers—holding 75 percent of the global total. Nepal 121 to 355, Bhutan 75 to 151, and Russia 360 to 480–540 achieved notable growth, while China records slow progress 45 to 20–60.
Conversely, Southeast Asia faces severe distress. Indonesia holds 371–400 tigers under heavy threat, and Thailand dropped slightly from 170 to 148–189. Bangladesh stands at 106–114 (125 in the 2024 census), reflecting rigorous scientific recounting rather than its unscientific 2004 baseline of 440. Alarmingly, Malaysia collapsed from 500 to 120–150, and Myanmar plunged to 22. Tragically, tigers are now functionally extinct (0) in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam—down from their respective 2010 baselines of 10, 25, and 10.
According to the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) Cat Specialist Group and WWF, as of July 2026, breeding populations are confirmed in only ten range states: : India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, China, and Myanmar. Tigers now occupy less than 7 per cent of their original historical range.
Shared Ecosystems and Methodological Accuracy
As home to nearly 75 percent of the world’s wild tigers, India plays a central role in conservation. Its Project Tiger, launched in 1973 with 9 protected areas, has expanded to 58 tiger reserves as of 2026.
Both India and Bangladesh share a critical responsibility in protecting the Sundarbans—the world’s largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report and 2026 satellite data, global sea levels are rising at 3.8 mm annually and could reach up to 2 meters by 2100 under high-emission scenarios. This severely threatens the UNESCO World Heritage Sundarbans, putting 96 per cent of its tiger habitats at risk of submergence well before 2070 and raising the threat of tiger extinction this century. Despite this, Bangladesh's 2024 census reported a population rise to 125 tigers.
Therefore, the governments of Bangladesh and West Bengal are adopting a two-pronged strategy to protect the Royal Bengal Tigers of the Sundarbans and the existence of local communities. Alongside constructing high earthen mounds (Bagher Tila or Tiger Mounds), various long-term conservation activities are being implemented, including nylon fencing, SMART patrolling.
Protecting Sundarbans tiger habitats requires historical clarity on counting methods. While a 2004 pugmark survey claimed 440 tigers in Bangladesh, expert Dr. Monirul H. Khan dismissed it as "totally unscientific," noting the population didn't drop drastically to 106 from 440. His 2006 survey estimated around 200 tigers, proving earlier figures were overestimated.
Earlier historical estimates further show these methodological shifts: Gimount Fort estimated 100 tigers in 1963; Hendrich estimated 350 in 1975; a foreign agency estimated 459 in 1991; survey estimates ranged from 300 to 479 in 1992–1993; and a 1994 census recorded 369.
Irreversible Losses and the Kazakhstan Reintroduction
The current Red List status of extinct subspecies remains unchanged. Three subspecies vanished forever during the last century:
Bali tiger (Panthera tigris balica): Extinct by the 1940s/1950s (last record: September 1937; Seidensticker, 1987).
Caspian tiger (Panthera tigris virgata): Vanished by the early 1970s (last records: 1970 in Turkey, 1973 in USSR; Jackson, 1993).
Javan tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica): Disappeared by the late 1970s (last record: 1976 in Meru Betiri National Park; Tilson & Nyhus, 2010).
A Beacon of Hope in Ile-Balkhash:
Despite permanent losses, WWF, IUCN, and the Kazakh government are restoring tigers to the Caspian tiger's historic range, as a genetic study (Driscoll et al., 2009) proved Amur and Caspian tigers are nearly identical.
Following prey restoration, a founding pair from the Netherlands in September 2024 and four tigers from Russia in early 2026 arrived in Kazakhstan. UNDP confirms they are adapting well, aiming for a self-sustaining population of 50 by 2035 and establishing Kazakhstan as the 14th tiger-range country.
The Imperative for 2026 and Beyond
By 2026, threats have evolved. While awareness has reduced demand for tiger parts in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), illegal captive breeding farms still feed black markets, while climate change and habitat loss drive human-tiger conflict.
Monitoring now relies on AI surveillance, drones, community involvement, and politically independent cross-border funding. Securing long-term support is vital to save wild tigers from the fate of the Bali, Caspian, and Javan subspecies.
The 2026 World Tiger Day slogan—“Their survival is in our hands”—is a binding moral imperative. Safeguarding this apex predator is essential to preventing the cascade of ecosystem collapse and protecting the planet’s shared ecological future.
